Dr Jayesh Gohil

Dr Gohil has been trained in the area of invasive as well as non-invasive cardiology at the very busy cardiology Departments of Liverpool and John Hunter hospitals, NSW, Australia. He has been a practising cardiologist in the Illawarra area for more than 6 years both in the public and in private hospitals. His previous rooms prior to moving into the Wollongong Medical Specialists were at South Coast Cardiology 23 Urunga Parade, Wollongong. He holds a Staff Specialist position at the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD). He has admitting rights at the Wollongong hospital, Shellharbour hospital, Figtree Private and Sydney South West Private hospitals. Dr Gohil is the first practising Electrophysiologist in the Illawarra area. He has gained his wide ranging experience by working in different countries such as India, New Zealand and Australia. His special interests include device implantation including loop recorder, pacemakers, defibrillators (ICD) and biventricular pacemakers for heart failure patients. Dr Gohil performs electrophysiology (EPS) studies and ablations. He also consults patients on other general cardiac conditions such as chest pain, shortness of breath, heart failure, syncope, cardiac risk stratification.

Dr Jane Zhang

Consultant Endocrinologist

Dr Jane Zhang is a staff specialist at the Wollongong Hospital and a co-investigator for the Illawarra Diabetes Service’s Clinical Trial and Research Unit.She is also involved in clinical research in the area of gestational diabetes. She obtained her primary medical degrees from the University of NSW in 2005. Dr Zhang undertook her specialist training at Blacktown, Concord, Campbelltown and Westmead hospitals. Her interests include diabetes, thyroid disease, general endocrinology and osteoporosis.

Dr Mohammad Mohiuddin

Consultant Endocrinologist and Physician

Dr Mohiuddin completed his training in endocrinology and general medicine in New Zealand in 2008. He worked as a doctor in various capacities in New Zealand for about 13 years prior to moving to the Illawarra in 2010. He also has 10 years of overseas medical experience. Dr Mohiuddin obtained his primary medical degree from Dhaka University in Bangladesh. He is currently working as a Staff Specialist in general medicine and endocrinology at Shellharbour Public Hospital since December 2010. Dr Mohiuddin has amitting rights at the Wollongong and Figtree Private hospitals. He is a Clinical Senior Lecturer in the Graduate School of Medicine (GSM) at the University of Wollongong. His area of interest include diabetes, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, pituitary gland disease, bone disease, obesity and metabolic syndrome.

Dr Jay Parikh is a neurologist trained at Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney. Dr Parikh currently holds a Staff Specialist appointment at the Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital and a VMO position at the Sydney Adventist Hospital. He did a fellowship in Movement disorders and also gained extensive exposure in neurophysiology. He consults in general neurology including headache, stroke, multiple sclerosis and epilepsy. He holds expertise in the management of movement disorders such as Parkinsonism, Dystonia, Tic disorder, tremors, Chorea and other movement disorders. He is experienced in Deep brain stimulation programming for Parkinsonism treatment. He offers consultation for neurophysiology and provides the services such as Nerve conduction studies and EMG for various forms of neuropathy and myopathy locally in Illawarra. He also performs Botulinum toxin injection for cervical dystonia, chronic migraine, Blepharospasm, hemifacial spasm, focal limb spasticity post stroke or MS, severe primary axillary hyperhydrosis, focal limb dystonia, Tics.

Dr Akhunji is a cardiothoracic surgeon. He has been providing his services to the patients of the Illawarra region for more than last seven years. Dr Akhunji has been providing a consultation service locally since last 3 years or so. He has admitting and operating rights at The Prince of Wales and St George Public and Private Hospitals in Sydney. Dr Akhunji has extensive experience in Cardiac surgery, in particular coronary artery bypass (including off pump), complex valvular surgery with repair and replacement, aortic aneurysm and redo cardiac surgery. His interests extend to Thoracic surgery, including management of lung cancer and Video assisted surgery for coin lesion in lungs, pleural effusion, pneumothorax, lung biopsy, mediastinal tumour and empyema.

Dr Fernando is a Consultant Geriatrician and staff Specialist at Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District(ISLHD) since January 2013. He has admitting rights at the Wollongong and Shellharbour Public Hospitals. Dr Fernando completed 6 years of training at the ISLHD and Prince of Wales Hospital prior to taking a job as a Staff Specialist. He has had further training in Psycho –Geriatrics and Palliative Care.

He accepts referrals for elderly patients (>65years) with

– Dementia/Cognitive Impairment with or without behavioural issues.

– Falls/Recurrent falls/syncope

– Chronic pain, Frailty/ Reduced mobility

– Patients with multiple co-morbidities/chronic illnesses/ polypharmacy

– Psychogeriatric issues (depression, anxiety)

– Parkinson’s disease/Parkinson’s syndromes.

– patients from residential care facilities with geriatric issues.

– not coping at home, needing residential aged care placement-assist and advice regarding the ACAT process.

Dr Zoran Apostoloski is a Consultant Endocrinologist with strong ties to the Illawarra. He completed his secondary schooling locally at Smith’s Hill High School and subsequently obtained his Bachelor of Biomedical Science at the University of Wollongong. He completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at The University of Melbourne in 2007. He returned back To Wollongong to undertake his internship and residency at the Wollongong Hospital. He completed his specialist training in the wide area of Endocrinology at the Wollongong, Campbelltown, and Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospitals. He is now employed as a Staff Specialist in Endocrinology at the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD), and has a broad interest in the field of Endocrinology.

Consultant Cardiologist

Dr Jeff Ball studied Medicine at Liverpool University, UK obtaining an honours degree. He developed an interest in Cardiology whilst working at the Cardiothoracic Centre in Liverpool. He subsequently trained in Cardiology in North West England before a residency in Brisbane, Australia. He returned to the UK to take up a Cardiology post in Leeds. Here he undertook research into echocardiography (ultrasound examination of the heart) and intracoronary ultrasound.

Jeff was appointed as a Consultant Cardiologist in Liverpool in 1996 creating a Department of Cardiology at Whiston Hospital. He developed both inpatient and outpatient services and introduced both invasive and non-invasive Cardiology procedures for the first time. In 2003 he returned to Brisbane to a Fellowship under Professor Thomas Marwick, world renowned expert in echocardiography.

In 2013, Jeff moved to the Shoalhaven taking up a post as Consultant Cardiologist at Shoalhaven District Memorial Hospital. He also practises from rooms in Nowra and now in Shellharbour.

Jeff’s practice includes all areas of adult Cardiology. He sees patients with chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations, abnormal heart rhythms, dizziness and blackouts. He has a particular interest in diseases of the coronary arteries (which become narrowed in patients suffering angina or heart attacks) and heart valve disease. He is also interested in chest pain syndromes which can mimic angina, such as cardiac syndrome X and has published on this subject. He maintains a specialist interest in all aspects and modalities of echocardiography.

Dr Ajay Purushottam is our consultant Nephrologist. He works at the office in Wollongong as well as the office in Flinders. He is staff specialists at Wollongong Public Hospital and Shellharbour Public Hospital.

 

Dr Riton K Das

Dr Riton Das is a Haematologist trained in both clinical and laboratory haematology at Liverpool and Westmead hospitals in Sydney. After obtaining fellowship from Royal college of pathologists of Australasia and Royal Australasian college of Physicians, He commenced his clinical practice as a VMO haematologist at Port Macquarie Base hospital, ICON Cancer Care Centre, Revesby and Sydney South West private hospital. He has recently joined as a VMO at Wollongong private hospital. He works in close relation with the haematology department at Wollongong public hospital and attends multidisciplinary meeting to discuss difficult cases in order to provide most up-to-date and evidence based treatment to his patients. He also works as a Haematopathologist at Laverty pathology. He has now joined our practice with an aim to provide outstanding haematology services to ISLHD. He is an excellent communicator who maintains a high standard of professional relationship with his colleagues, patients and their caregivers.

In his clinical practice, he provides assistance with the following:

– Polycythemia/Thrombocytosis/leukocytosis

– Neutropenia/Thrombocytopenia

– Iron deficiency/ Iron overload (Haemochromatosis)
